On 28/29 November 2014, the first weekend in Advent, there will be a program entitled BASS - Babelsberg Art & Science Symposium in the foyer of the screening room of the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF in Potsdam.

A sympathetic word and a loving gesture alleviate the mechanisms of pain - this has been proven on a neurological level. But we not only exist when we think - we can also experience ourselves and our bodies in meditative stillness and in the vibrations of music.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. Picasso

Herein lies the suggestion that we can experience ourselves and communicate with ourselves in the presence of art. This symposium should help us to experience this holistic concept.

Over the two days of this symposium, the various aspects of the embodiment of perceptions will be made into something that can be experienced and observed intellectually and artistically and will appeal to the senses.

In a public workshop, in lectures, a future symposium, and a paincongress for doctors, we will explore the question: to what extent can we trigger search and change processes through crucial problems and developments.

What significance do thought patterns and metaphors have for our actions and our emotions? What does it actually mean to have free will and our own faculty of perception?
How can we revalue the past through decisive thought associations, design our present situations and trigger a creative process for the future?

Language, thought and art as design instruments for our own lives and as a bridge for all of us as human beings form the focal point of these events in Potsdam Babelsberg, which we aim to approach from a neuroscientific, artisitic and philosopical point of view.

The symposium links elements from medicine and neuroscience, psychology and social policy with the visual arts in its various presentation forms and targets people interested in both social policy and art as well as medical specialists.

The organisers Dr. med. Johanna Michel and Dr. med. Hermann Schmidt see the healing arts in the tradition of the complex perception of mankind and its sensory translation into music and other visual forms of art. Through the artistic projects under the name Valle Venia and regular internationally and scientifically recognised events, they promote the socio-political perception of the need to understand pain as an interdisciplinary and psychosocial phenomenon.
